Sierra Club Statement on BP’s
Suspension from Federal Contracts
(Washington, DC) – Today, the Environmental
Protection Agency announced it had temporarily suspended BP from new federal
contracts due to the company’s criminal role in the 2010 Gulf Coast oil disaster.
Sierra Club
Executive Director Michael Brune release the following statement in response:
"Whether it’s in the form of tax subsidies
or federal contracts, BP doesn’t deserve a single penny from American
taxpayers. BP lied to Congress and lied to the American people about their
criminally negligent role in the Gulf Coast oil disaster that killed eleven
people and spewed five million barrels of oil into the Gulf.
The Sierra Club is working hard to ensure BP is held fully
accountable for the damage they inflicted on Gulf communities and resources by
ensuring the remaining Clean Water Act and Oil Pollution Act suits will
result in at least $60 billion in penalties. As Gulf families and businesses
struggle to recover, and impacts to fisheries and sea life continue to unfold,
BP must be brought to justice and made an example of to deter future industry
negligence."
