Dear
Fellow Sierran
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) Little State, Big Voice
2) An Evening with Michael Brune
3) Students Will Lead the Way
1) Little State, Big Voice
|
By now you've probably received more emails than you care to count asking you to be a part of the massive February 17th climate action in Washington DC. Expect more, because this event will either prove or disprove the strength of the environmental movement. Happily, it appears that Rhode Island will be well represented in Washington. Brown University has organized two buses, and I have coordinated another with a possibility of one more if there's enough interest. Indeed in the competition between Chapters to see which state will be most represented, we are second only to Virginia, which has advantages in both size and proximity. You can track the competition here. Even better, you can RSVP for Feb 17 yourself and help us win! You can get your bus tickets on eventbrite or send me an email if the tickets sell out so that I can judge demand for another bus. Thanks!

2) An Evening with Michael Brune
|
Need inspiration to get down to Washington DC? Or, maybe you have a quesiton about the Club's historic decision to engage in civil disobedience? In either case, I suggest you get on the line for a conference call with Sierra Club's executive director Michael Brune. On Thursday (February 7th) at 7:30pm use the call in number 1-866-501-6174, then use the conference code 2000001#.

3) Students Will Lead the Way
|
Not only are students a big part of making the rally in Washington a success, they are also spearheading a national movement to get large institutions to dump their investments in fossil fuel industry stocks (known as divestment). Mostly the efforts have focused on universities, but municipalities like Seattle are giving into pressure as well. Locally, Brown's divestment movement is hopeful of victory later this month. Are you an alumnus, faculty, staff or student, and have you signed the petition asking President Paxson to take action yet?
