Congratulations outings volunteers

SCO-outings awardMission Outdoors volunteers received an Outdoor Inspiration Award, presented by adidas Outdoor, at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Outdoor Inspiration Award celebrates inspiring individuals, companies and non-profits that have played a role in increasing participation in outdoor activities.

“Each Mission Outdoors volunteer and participant is doing their part to increase access to outdoor recreation, expand the conservation movement and honor John Muir’s legacy,” said Stacy Bare, Mission Outdoors Director. “We’re honored and excited our volunteers are being recognized by the outdoor industry for the time and effort they donate to ensuring that everyone has the chance to enjoy and explore the outdoors.”

REI CEO Sally Jewell nominated to be the next Interior Secretary

sally jewellOutdoor enthusiasts and conservationists across the nation praised President Obama's nomination of REI's Sally Jewell to be our next Interior Secretary.

“Whether it’s been through her work to get more kids outside or her accomplishments in building a business that recognizes the passion Americans have to explore the outdoors, Sally Jewell has demonstrated that she knows just how important our wild places are to our national legacy and our economy," said Sierra Club's Executive Director Mike Brune. "There are few more outspoken or dedicated champions in the effort to connect children with nature than Sally Jewell, who has provided critical support to the Sierra Club Inner City Outings program and played an integral role in founding the Outdoors Alliance for Kids."

Excerpt: "Nature and Decency," by Shavar Thompson, former ICO participant

Shavar.jpg"The Harrisburg Inner City Outings program allowed me to temporarily escape the madness that goes on every day in urban neighborhoods. I was not only allowed to see more, but I was shown that there were alternatives to what I knew as truth. I tested water, built pots out of clay with manure I helped collect, dug fossils, navigated some of the most dangerous trails in the U.S., built reefs, made birdfeeders, snorkeled, caught crabs in the middle of the ocean -- all in the name of conservation. In the name of what God wants us to be: servants. Without ICO I wouldn’t be as open-minded, passionate, humble, grateful, caring, and loving as I am today. I wouldn’t love my environment and all the creatures in it. I wouldn't care about picking up the garbage I see floating around. I wouldn’t have had an opportunity to witness God’s love on Earth and I wouldn’t have wanted to give back the same. May the giving start here." Read the full story.
