Dear
InterRelated: Sierra Club Maine Chapter March Film Event Kate Cheney Chappell Join us! Friday, March 22 |
Sierra Club Maine would like to invite you to our March film event, InterRelated: One Artist's Response to Rachel Carson. An Evening with Kate Cheney Chappell.
All the life of the planet is interrelated…each species has its own ties to others, and all are related to the earth. These words of Rachel Carson appear on a boulder at the National Wildlife refuge named for her in Wells, Maine, where artist Kate Cheney Chappell often walks. Carson's example has been a guiding light for Chappell, since she and her husband Tom co-founded Tom's of Maine in 1970. Chappell makes art that reflects her deep concern for the natural world and her commitment to care for it.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of Silent Spring, Chappell was invited to mount a solo exhibit of her work at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, the alma mater she shares with Rache Carson. Join us for an evening of her moving images and words: birds tangled in the word DDT, Earth Envelopes, Starfish and Medusa jellyfish, and a giant eagle's nest installation with Raku eggs that open to reveal messages of warning.
Chappell writes: My work reflects Rachel Carson's understanding that we are all part of the web of life. Her urgent warnings about the misguided use of pesticides and the depredations of humankind on fragile ecosystems are still timely. What we do to the earth we do to ourselves.
Chappell will present a short film, still photos and commentary on her art, followed by a Q&A discussion. Catalogues from the exhibit will be available for sale; a portion of the sale will benefit the Rachel Carson Institute.
In a happy coincidence, many of the pieces which will be discussed during Chappell's talk on March 22 can be seen in the Maine Women Pioneers III: Worldview show at the UNE Gallery from March 12 - May 12.
