Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit. On June 20, 2013, American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and public transportation systems across the country will celebrate the 8th Annual National Dump the Pump Day. Get involved! Dump the Pump Day encourages people to ride public transportation (instead of driving) to save money and to help protect public health and our environment. In these tough economic times with high gas prices, this day is especially relevant. So, this Thursday, get out of your car and use local public transit, such as buses, rail, walking, or biking. Transit agencies across the state are planning events and other activities; check with your local provider for details. For more information, please visit the Arizona Transit Association's webpage. |

The South Mountain Freeway would cut through a portion of South Mountain Park, exacerbate air quality problems, destroy wildlife habitat and cut off wildlife movement corridors, endanger public health, and more. It would also continue the Arizona Department of Transportation's (ADOT) short-sighted focus rather than looking toward long-term transportation solutions. ADOT is hosting several public meetings for people to learn more and to provide comments. Please participate in one of these meetings!
Learn more in our fact sheet. If you are not able to participate in one of the above meetings, please submit written comments requesting that ADOT select the No Build Alternative to protect our environment and our communities. For more information and to get involved, please contact Sandy Bahr at (602) 253-8633 or sandy.bahr@sierraclub.org. |

Four of five Arizona Corporation Commissioners decided to again delay implementation of new energy efficiency programs that would save money and energy for Tucson Electric Power (TEP) customers. Although the Commission approved increased funding for energy efficiency programs overall, it eliminated the new programs from the rate case. This will mean that TEP falls further behind with meeting our state's energy efficiency standard and that renters, schools, businesses, and other customers will not have access to the same programs that Arizona Public Service (APS) Company customers have – programs that help reduce and stabilize energy bills. This decision to delay new programs was part of a 4.4 percent rate increase approved by the Commission. If you are a TEP customer, please take a moment to thank Commissioner Susan Bitter Smith who voted no on eliminating the new programs and who specifically voted against the rate increase due to the limits on energy efficiency. Please thank Commissioner Bitter Smith for supporting energy efficiency. To find out more, contact Sandy Bahr at (602) 253-8633 or sandy.bahr@sierraclub.org. |

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will be considering adoption of the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code. Adoption of this code will mean that homes use less energy and that consumers save dollars. Efficient homes are more affordable, reduce default and foreclosure risk, drive down the short-term and long-term cost of energy, improve air quality, reduce stress on our electrical grid, defer the need to construct costly new energy infrastructure, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Please ask your county supervisor to support energy efficiency! |

Energy Tip O' the Day Hot water heaters are often one of the primary energy-users in a home. By installing a timer on your hot water heater, you can significantly reduce your electricity usage and energy bills. This is especially true in the summer months, when hot water in the tank does not cool as rapidly. Hot water heater timers are inexpensive and are easy to install. |
