Take Action: Don't Let the Senate Obstruct Clean Air and Water Laws The ridiculous obstruction in the Senate is affecting not just the prospects for new legislation, but also the effectiveness of hundreds of laws that are already in place. A handful of senators are blocking the appointment of dozens of highly qualified nominees - tapped by President Obama to lead everything from the EPA to the National Labor Relations Board. That doesn't just mean vacancies at key watchdog agencies. It means the key safeguards those agencies are supposed to enforce - like laws that protect our air, water, wildlife, and lands - are threatened. Tell your senators to stop the obstruction and confirm the president's nominees. Take Action: Fix the Broken Federal Coal Leasing Program Last week the Department of Interior's Office of the Inspector General released a report confirming U.S. coal companies receive massive subsidies from U.S. taxpayers for mining leases on public lands. The Inspector General's findings come on the heels of another report which reveals that the current Bureau of Land Management (BLM) leasing program cuts U.S. taxpayers out of billions of dollars in revenue. Tell the Secretary of the Interior to enact reforms that call for fair market value calculations which could collect millions of dollars in lost revenues, make coal more expensive to extract, and keep more coal in the ground where it belongs. Grassroots Activism: Victory Over California Nuclear Power Plant Sierra Club activists cheered the news last week that the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant between Los Angeles and San Diego would be permanently shut down. The victory is a true example of grassroots activism, as residents fought for years to get the dangerous plant retired. Learn more on The Planet blog. |
