"A low-carbon, clean energy economy can be an engine of growth for decades to come. And I want America to build that engine. I want America to build that future – right here in the United States of America." –President Barack Obama

A number of cities, towns, and counties around the state are considering giving energy efficiency in their communities a boost. Please help support this effort! By adopting the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), communities can not only increase energy efficiency in new buildings but can also save consumers money! The 2012 IECC is approximately 30% more efficient than the 2006 code that many communities are currently using. Unfortunately, numerous groups are pushing back against adoption of the newest codes. We need your help to encourage city/county leaders to vote for the latest code! Please contact your city/town council members and your county Board of Supervisors to encourage them to adopt the 2012 IECC. If you reside in one of the following areas, you can use the links below. If not, please contact us so we can direct you to the right information. If you live in Flagstaff, it is especially important that you attend the City Council Meeting Tuesday night. See details here. |

Comment deadline is July 24 The South Mountain Freeway would cut through a portion of South Mountain Park, exacerbate air quality problems, destroy wildlife habitat and cut off wildlife movement corridors, endanger public health, and more. It would also continue the Arizona Department of Transportation's (ADOT) short-sighted focus rather than looking toward long-term transportation solutions. Learn more in our fact sheet. Please submit written comments requesting that ADOT select the No Build Alternative to protect our environment and our communities. For more information and to get involved, please contact Sandy Bahr at (602) 253-8633 or sandy.bahr@sierraclub.org. |

On June 25, President Obama took a step forward on climate change when he announced his administration's plan to fight the climate crisis. We applaud him for taking that step. The plan includes new energy efficiency standards for federal buildings and appliances, scales up responsible clean energy production on public lands with an ambitious new commitment to power 6 million homes by 2020, and uses the full authority of the Clean Air Act to cut dangerous carbon pollution from power plants. We look forward to a day when dirty fossil fuels, destructive oil drilling, mountaintop removal, natural gas fracking, and dangerous nuclear energy are things of the past. We need to continue to push him to say no to the disastrous Keystone XL Pipeline and to focus on truly clean renewable energy resources such as solar and wind. The President's announcement is a step in the right direction. |

APS Seeks to Eliminate Net Metering Arizona Public Service (APS) is proposing to roll-back benefits for roof-top solar customers. Currently, you can save about 70% on your electric bills with a solar roof-top system. You use less electricity from the grid and also receive credits for excess power you send back to the grid. There are also the societal benefits from solar -- less pollution and less water use, for example. Now, APS wants to change that by either forcing roof-top solar customers to use a rate plan that results in significantly higher bills or to pay residential customers with solar rooftops a low rate for the excess energy they produce. In this case APS would pay only 4 cents per kilowatt-hour, must less than the fair market rate. Both of these proposals would result in significantly less savings to the solar-rooftop customer and would undermine residential solar-rooftop programs overall. Speak up and ask the Arizona Corporation Commission to retain the current net metering program. Speak up for Solar, support net metering! |
