1) Our new website
After a long and arduous journey, Sierra Club volunteer extraordinaire Kevin Proft and I have finally developed the NEW CHAPTER WEBSITE with a little help from staff at national. Check it out. I think that the blog will be particularly informative for Rhode Islanders, bookmark it today.

2) Brayton Point Protest
Yesterday I participated in the 350.org Summer Heat protest of Brayton Point. There were about five hundred others there with me from all over New England and a very strong RI contingent. 44 activists were arrested as part of a planned civil disobedience portion of the action. It remains to be seen whether Governor Deval Patrick will hear the urgent cries of environmentalists and shut down the power plant. In the meantime, the RI Chapter is determined to start working with our Massachusetts colleagues to explore other ways of closing the monstrous plant which is the biggest carbon emitter in the Northeast. Would you like to get involved in this campaign? Let me know.

3) What's killing the bees?
Over the last several years scientists have been documenting Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) which has been killing a third or more of bee colonies each year. Many theories have been proposed about what is behind this problem (cell towers, GMOs, insecticides, etc), but none has proven to completely explain it. As it turns out, they might all be right. A new study suggests that there is no single cause for CCD. Rather, it is a combination of insecticides, fungicides and other environmental factors that is at work.
