Dear
Fellow Sierran
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) Deepwater Win
2) Beating Brayton
3) Divestment in the News
1) Deepwater Win
|
Last week for the first time ever, the federal government had an auction for offshore wind leases. The leases are for waters off the coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Great news: RI's own Deepwater Wind won both the auctions, which could turn into spinning turbines as early as 2017. Read more here.

2) Beating Brayton
|
The Brayton Point coal plant protest on July 28th was the opening salvo in what is sure to be a long campaign to shut down the biggest single source of carbon pollution in the Northeast. Fossil Free RI took a leading role in turning people out from Rhode Island, and I was able to document the story of Sherrie and Nick (two FFRI activists) on that fateful day in the Providence Phoenix. We're not done. Next Monday (August 12th), we'll be conducting another civic outing canvass in Bristol to organize the community against the plant and to gather petition signatures to get RI to divest from fossil fuels. Can you help out? RSVP HERE.

3) Divestment in the News
|
Speaking of divestment, did you see the headline out of Forbes? While I disagree with the statement in the article that there are abundant fossil fuel resources, the rest of it does a great job of making the conservative financial argument for fossil fuel divestment. Consider sharing it with your friends who think divestment is just some far out idea. Then, ask them to sign the petition.
