Dear Friend,
We need your help...
This year marks the tenth anniversary that the Massachusetts Sierra Club and our allies have been working to update the Bottle Bill - the nickel deposit on beverage containers. But it's a sad anniversary. For over ten years, the Massachusetts House of Representatives has simply refused to put the proposed update to a vote. Although the State Senate has voted in favor its passage twice, the House has failed to act on this bill.
Every year that we delay action, 1.5 BILLION containers litter our parks and our streets, or get trucked to our landfills -- more than enough to overflow Fenway Park.
The issue is clear: on one side is just about every environmental and public advocacy group in the state, and on the other are big corporations, more concerned about enhancing their bottom line than addressing our growing litter problem or the need to recycle.
Every session, we ask ourselves the same question... should we bring this to the ballot as a citizen's initiative? After all, this is exactly why the citizen's initiative process was developed. But unlike some states, in Massachusetts a ballot initiative is a huge undertaking. In order to get on the ballot, we would need 100,000 signatures from all corners of the state.
After careful consideration, we've decided to go forward. We've already begun the process by filing with the Attorney General, and we'll start gathering signatures the moment we receive the printed petitions, but we need your help. Click here now to help us with this project!
Gathering 100,000 signatures won't be easy. But with dedicated volunteers like you, we can do it.
Just a few hours gathering the signatures of voters will help put us over the top. Please click here now to help update the Massachusetts Bottle Bill.
Sincerely
Ryan Black, Chapter Director
Mass. Sierra Club
