Dear
Fellow Sierran
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) Brayton Point Emissions Kill
2) Energy Exodus
3) An Earnest Appeal
1) Brayton Point Emissions Kill
|
The carbon pollution that the Brayton Point Coal Plant emits is reason enough to shut it down. If that weren't enough though, Brayton also produces other toxic pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), which cause and exacerbate asthma and other life threatening disorders. The end result is people are dying, between 19 and 34 people per year, according to a study by Coal Free Mass. Some of those people are Rhode Islanders, and we have a right and an obligation to make sure it stops. The Chapter will be working in Bristol and Warren to engage people in a review of the plant's allowable SO2 emissions being undertaken by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. Please encourage your contacts in those communities to take this survey to help guide our advocacy. You can take it, too! For more information on our work to shut down the plant, check out our campaign page.

2) Energy Exodus
|
We're not the only ones working on shuttering the Brayton Point Coal Plant. Numerous groups in Massachusetts are in fact taking the lead. Over the past week, the Better Future Project, 350MA, and others organized the "Energy Exodus" march from the plant to Barnstable, which is set to be the base of operations for the Cape Wind offshore wind farm. Read the latest here.

3) An Earnest Appeal
|
Here at the Rhode Island Chapter of the Sierra Club, we're a lot better at fighting to save the planet than we are at asking for your money and time to keep doing it. Well our new Chair Steve Sheeky made a valiant effort to change that last week with his appeal for volunteers and funding. If you missed it, please find it here and consider how you might be able to pitch in.
