Dear
Fellow Sierran
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) Brayton Point is Slated for Closure!
2) October Outing: Check Out the Blackstone
3) Do The Math at URI: TONIGHT!
4) The Brown Divestment Debate
1) Brayton Point is Slated for Closure!
The Brayton Point Coal Plant, which we had been gearing up to fight a long and hard battle against, has been slated for shutdown in 2017 by its new owners. This is great news for the climate and great news for the lungs of Rhode Islanders and Massachusetts residents who live in the shadow of the plant. HOORAY! You can read more about it in ecoRI news.
2) October Outing: Check Out the Blackstone
Join us in Woonsocket on October 26th as we checkout the Blackstone Bikeway, which has just recently seen numerous improvements. We'll start at 10am and be done by noon. Our meeting place will be the parking lot at Davison Avenue. More details can be found on our Facebook event page, and please don't forget to invite your friends.
3) Do The Math at URI: TONIGHT
The Chapter is partnering with Fossil Free RI and student groups to screen Bill McKibben's "Do The Math" film tonight. We'll be using this opportunity as a springboard to kick the divestment campaigns into a higher gear now that school is back in session. PLEASE COME! We have special messages to deliver to the audience from Bill McKibben and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, so don't miss out. You can RSVP here and use the event page to invite everyone.
4) The Brown Divestment Debate
Two weeks ago, Bill McKibben came to Brown University to debate Chris Parenti of the Nation and Jim Rogers of Duke Energy about whether the school should divest its holdings in 15 coal companies. We were there to record the event, and you can view it on our YouTube station right now.
