Wilderness in Missouri – Citizen Campaign for a Lasting Public Legacy
John Karel will present a lecture at Lee Auditorium, Missouri History Museum (map), at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22. During the 1970's, a vigorous grassroots citizen campaign was conducted to identify, protect, and legislatively designate several tracts of federal land in Missouri under the National Wilderness Preservation System. John Karel's talk will summarize the story of that campaign, and of the resulting designations, with commentary on the meaning and importance of these areas for Missouri's natural and cultural heritage.

Local Member Participates in National Sierra Club Outing
Long-time member Jim Rhodes recently participated in a backpack trip up to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This was a national Sierra Club outing from September 23-27. There were ten participants from various areas and two leaders. Jim was a bit worried about his ability to do the trip but he talked with one of the leaders who suggested he do some practice hikes with his new backpack fully-loaded. There were quite a few very experienced backpackers on the trip but Jim was able to keep up and it was a good experience for him. Check out his trip photos on Flickr.
