The Sunshine State should be a world leader in solar energy production. Instead, we're home to dirty and obsolete coal plants like Duke Energy's Crystal River.
But we have an opportunity to change that. Duke has already admitted that it would cost more to continue running these units than to retire them. So the question is not if Florida will move beyond coal, but when and how.
Duke's leadership, including their new CEO Lynn Good, is beginning to listen as Sierra Club joins with allies in the business, labor, health and faith communities in the Sunshine State Clean Energy Coalition. But we're missing an important voice: yours.
Tell Duke it's time to retire Crystal River and replace it with clean energy.
The Crystal River Coal Plant causes mercury pollution, makes our children sick, and generates carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. It is the fuel of the past and our continued dependance on it holds us back.
The time for coal power is past. Floridians know that the Sunshine State has some of the world's best solar power potential, and it's time for Duke Energy to listen and start producing clean energy.
Tell Duke Energy to shut down its dirty Crystal River plant and move toward clean energy alternatives.
In addition to stopping pollution, clean energy is also good for ratepayers and the economy. Dollar for dollar, clean energy solutions create more jobs than coal. Further, the cost of coal is going up, while the price of solar power and energy savings programs keeps going down. Duke Energy can give consumers a break by investing in energy efficiency, which saves consumers money.
Sign the petition and send a clear message to Duke to clean up their act.
Thanks for everything you do to protect the environment,
Beyond Coal Campaign
