The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking public comment on proposals to reduce haze-forming pollutants, particularly nitrogen oxide emissions, from Navajo Generating Station. These pollutants harm public health and also obscure skies over Grand Canyon and other national parks and wilderness areas. Sierra Club wants to make sure the plant reduces its unhealthful pollutants. We are asking that the plant operators simply comply with EPA's proposed rule or opt for a combination of retirement and retrofits that would meet the same or greater reductions. This clean-up needs to be done in a timely manner as we have already waited too long.

It's been an interesting and challenging month in the energy realm with plenty of ups and downs. We are tremendously thankful for all of you who have stood up for a clean and sustainable energy future for our state! On November 13, more than 1,000 people joined together to protest Arizona Public Service's (APS) proposed changes to its net metering rule, which provides fair compensation to rooftop solar customers. Many of these individuals also provided oral comments to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) in support of rooftop solar. Unfortunately, the ACC did vote to add a new fee for rooftop solar customers, but it's not nearly as bad as it could have been. We urge you to learn more about this issue and to be ready to speak out against additional and higher fees in the future. In addition, more than 100 people in Phoenix and 50 in Tucson attended the Environmental Protection Agency's public hearings on Navajo Generating Station; many of these people provided public comments supporting a timely clean-up of this power plant. If you have not done so already, please take action and submit your own comments online. Thank you for standing with us and for taking action. Your actions have been noticed across the country. Together, we have made – and will continue to make – a difference. To learn how you can get further involved in energy issues in Arizona, please contact Sandy Bahr at (602) 253-8633 or sandy.bahr@sierraclub.org. |
