Dear
Fellow Sierran
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) ECRI Gubernatorial Forum, Thursday
2) The Phoenix Forum
3) Resilient RI Act Positioned Well
4) We The People, NOT The Corporations
5) Keystone XL Decision Postponed Again
1) ECRI Gubernatorial Forum, Thursday
|
Up until now there has not been a lot to separate the Democratic candidates for Governor, least of all on environmental topics which have not been examined by the local media. That will hopefully all change this Thursday morning when the Environment Council of Rhode Island (ECRI) will be holding a candidate's forum in Brown University's List Art building at 9:00am. Raimondo, Taveras, Pell, and Giroux will all be there (the Republicans declined to participate!). Will you be there, too? You can JOIN AND INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO THE EVENT HERE.

2) The Phoenix Forum
|
Couldn't make it to the first ever Phoenix Forum on Thursday last week? Well, you're in luck, because we recorded the great discussion and you can WATCH IT NOW ON YOUTUBE.

3) Resilient RI Act Positioned Well
|
One of the things that I touched on in the Forum, I also wrote about in last week's Phoenix. We've reached the middle of the legislative session, and it's a good time to take stock of where our bills stand. In particular, I've been thinking a lot about the Resilient RI Act. With more than 500 signatures on the petition in support of the bill, the general assembly is well aware how important this bill is to the public, but how do things stand? READ MY TAKE HERE.

4) We The People, NOT The Corporations
|
Another bill that means a lot to me personally (since I wrote it) is still waiting for its first hearing. It's the We The People Bill that would put a question on November's ballot to overturn the Citizen's United decision in the RI Constitution. The wait is almost over however. Next Tuesday the bill will be heard in the House Judiciary Committee, room 101, at 5:00pm. Please come and help me check corporate power. You can JOIN AND INVITE YOUR FRIENDS HERE.

5) Keystone XL Decision Postponed Again
|
For years the environmental community has been laboring to stop the Keystone XL Tar Sands pipeline, and it looks like that fight is going to be taking a little longer to settle. Last week, we learned that the Obama Administration has again delayed its final decision on whether the project can proceed or not. More information here. I wonder if it had anything to do with the arguments that Senator Whitehouse made in his op-ed opposed to the pipeline that appeared in CNN last week.
