BICYCLES: This spring, the City and four districts are partnering to install new bicycle parking and public repair stations in four commercial districts. The sixty-three bike racks will provide parking capacity for 154 bikes and will be installed near popular destinations in the Paseo, Plaza, Uptown 23rd, and Downtown Business districts.
RAIN BARRELS: Oklahoma City residents can purchase discounted rain barrels through the Central Oklahoma Stormwater Alliance by submitting an order form and payment here. The deadline to order is March 15. Prices start at $61 plus $2.50 online service fee. The City's urban agriculture ordinance permits a maximum of two 85-gallon rain barrels in the front yard and multiple barrels in the side and back yards. OKC's NEW COMPREHENSIVE PLAN: After years of public input, staff and consultant work, and special committee meetings, the City's new comprehensive plan, planokc, is nearing completion. After adoption, planokc will guide decisions about growth and development. Final citizen input due by March 20 -- Provide comments online at: http://okc.opencomment.us.
Feb 8, 6:30 pm - Outings Planning Meeting - It is time again for another fun Outings meeting! Everyone is welcome! Bring a potluck dish and some ideas for outings, or just come and be the first to hear about upcoming outings to get it on your calendar! Even if you're not an Outings Leader, if you have an idea for a possible outing, come and share it with us! Feb 11 - "Things Sierra Club Loves" at the State Capitol - Join us at the State Capitol, 2300 N. Lincoln & 23rd. We'll use a Valentine's Day theme to focus on "green" issues we totally support (like clean water and wind & solar energy. It will be more fun if you're there! Feb 19 - General Meeting: Talk Dirty to Me - Have you ever planted a lovely Spring veggie garden, only to wind up with 50 radishes rip at the same time and only a few zucchini plants that took over the entire garden? In our ongoing quest to bring people closer to their food sources, Elia Woods will help you plan what and how much to plant. Elia (Lia to some of you) is the co-founder of CommonWealth Urban Farms and has been growing food for 30 years. More about Lia and a little about the amazing things CommonWealth will be presented the night of this meeting. There will be a fun door-prize, starter plants and seed potatoes for sale, as well as a seed exchange and free planting guides. And if the thought of stopping over a garden makes your back ache, Paul Mays will give a brief presentation on his Edible Garden Service. Johnson Bridgwater, the brand-new Director of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club will also be presenting a brief summary of the legislative bills involving community Gardens and Pollinator Protection. it will be an action packed evening - come get inspired! Feb 21, 10am - Pruning Fruit Trees: Apples, Pears & Peaches. This is a hands-on practical exercise in pruning the most common fruit trees grown in Oklahoma. Please bring your own equipment, if you have them, including gloves, hand pruners, lopers, and tree saws. We will be meeting at Rick Wicker & Mary Straner's house at 2321 Cashion Place, OKC< 73112 for the first session on Saturday, February 21st at 10 am. For more practice or for those who can't make the first class, we will meet for the second session on Saturday, Feb 28th, 10am, at Lynn Cooper's place, south of Guthrie. Mar 7, 11 am - 3pm: First Aid and CPR Class - Don't get outdoors unprepared! Take a First Aid and/or CPR class, taught by Sierra Club Outings Leader and professional nurse, Traci Schaeffer! First Aid will be from 11 AM - 1 PM, and CPR will run from 1-3PM. The cost is $20 for one class or $40 for both. The card is through the American Heart Association and is valid for two years. The class is also open to youth ages 12 and older. Wear clothes that allow movement, since it will be necessary to get on the floor to perform skills. Mar 14 - 3rd Annual Cimarron St. Patrick's Day Party - Home of Mark & Susie Derichsweiler: Previously held as a fundraiser, this year's event will be a potluck/BYOB. Donations will certainly be welcome, but not required. Location: 217 NW 27th Street, OKC, OK.
Mar 28 - Cimarron Group Spring Fling at the Lake Hefner Boat Club (annual fundraising auction & awards) - Celebrate Spring with the Sierra Club. Save the Date and keep an eye out for auction and ticket information!
Apr 11-18, 2015 - Upscale Camping in the Caribbean. They call it "glamping", and this group will spend a week doing just that. Glamorous camping at scenic Cane Bay on St. Croix. We will stay in modern tent cabins, snorkel the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean, and make day excursions to sail, hike and generally explore the largest of the US Virgin Islands.
