Cars That Never Need Gas Wish you never had to fill up again? Darrell Dickey doesn't. He drives an electric car that's charged by photovoltaic panels on the roof of his house. He's one of three drivers who told us how they got into owning cars that are charged by wind or solar power. As Dickey puts it, "For $45,000 we got a car and fuel for the rest of our lives."
You probably won't be able to find a no-gas car by Memorial Day, but our "Pain in the Gas" webpage is chock full of gas-saving tips that'll save you fuel and money over the holiday weekend.

Helping Military Families Connect with Nature The Military Family Outdoor Initiative, a joint project of the Sierra Club and The Sierra Club Foundation, today announced a three-year grant of up to $23 million, provided by generous donors, to support three organizations that provide returning veterans and their families with healing, life-affirming outdoor experiences in the natural world.
The initiative builds on the success of a partnership the Sierra Club began last year with support to the National Military Family Association to provide week-long summer camp experiences to military children. NMFA's Operation Purple Camps engage kids in outdoor experiences and activities while teaching coping skills to help them deal with the deployment of one or both of their parents.

Mahalo Nui Loa, Hawaii The Hawaii state legislature passed a landmark measure on May 1 that would make the state the first in the nation to require solar water heaters as a standard feature on all new homes. The solar roofs bill, which received unanimous support in the House and only two dissenting votes in the Senate, was the top priority of the Hawaii Sierra Club this legislative session.
"This is the type of transformative policy that will define Hawaii's clean energy future," says Hawaii Sierra Club Director Jeff Mikulina. "We are the Saudi Arabia of sun -- every house in the state should be tapping into this free resource."

Good News from the Sunflower State Also on May 1, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius rejected an ultimatum by the state legislature to approve two new coal-fired power plants in the state. "It's great to see a leader get the big picture," said Kansas Sierra Club leader Bill Griffith. "Governor Sebelius is a rare breed of politician who examines long-term policy implications and truly does what is best for the citizens she represents."
For Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope's take on the good news from Kansas, see his blog, "Taking the Initiative."
