NC Chapter now on Facebook!
In our everlong quest to stay connected with members and supporters across the state, the NC Chapter would like to announce its new Facebook page.
The page is intended to be a place of discussion about environmental issues in our state, as well as a spot for organizing and networking. Post events online or take action through the Sierra Club's Facebook Action Center. Most importantly, become a 'fan' and stay up to date on what's going on in our state and across the country. (Note: you may need to join Facebook to access some pages.)
New Bern turning green
The Cypress Group and the New Bern Cool Cities Initiative Task Force, which reports to the New Bern Board of Aldermen, would like to thank Alderman Max Freeze for his life-long support of environmental issues and would like to thank New Bern for joining the Cool Cities initiative.
New Bern has approved a greenhouse gas inventory to assess its global warming emissions.
In the meantime, they plan to purchase hybrid vehicles for city administrative purposes.
For more information or to participate, contact Robert Scull.
Want to live in a Cool County?
The Cool Cities project is expanding to include counties too! Orange and Mecklenburg County have already stepped up to become a Cool County. Wake County could be next!
The Capital Group and the North Carolina Chapter of Sierra Club invite you to meet this Thursday, October 9th to strategize the Wake County Cool County campaign.
For more information or to start a Cool County campaign near you, email Kara Craig, NC Cool Cities Coordinator, at kara.craig@sierraclub.org or call her at (405) 208-2953.
Sierra Club volunteers clean up
Sierra Club volunteers made Big Sweep a huge success. In Charlotte, the Central Piedmont Group along with the County of Mecklenburg, American Forests and Central Piedmont Community College coordinated with Big Sweep for a clean-up at Mountain Island Lake and along Gar Creek, where 195 volunteers collected 4,000 pounds of trash including two big oil barrels, a complete wheel, bottles, a rim and a tire.
This event is part of a year-long series of tree plantings, clean-ups, and educational forums. To read more about the Mountain Island Lake restoration project, please visit the Chapter website.
In Winston-Salem, The Foothills Group recruited volunteers to be a part of week-long Big Sweep events, totaling over 3,000 volunteers. Thanks for keeping North Carolina clean and beautiful!
