Green, Efficient Transit Coming to NC?
Public interest in a revamped, interconnected transportation system has only grown in the state's legislative interim. Though widespread support for a more efficient transportation system didn't result in a signed bill in 2008, the reconvened General Assembly will likely revisit the issue: our state’s need for a seamless linkage of highways, public transportation, freight, passenger rail and ports.
Several representatives have placed transit atop their 2009 legislative priorities, and Governor Perdue recently repeated her support for light rail in the state's larger urban areas.
The Sierra Club will have an active voice in the state transit debate, and the Capital Group will play a lead organizing role around potential legislation. Got questions? Contact Capital Group Political Chair Ed Clayton.
Federal Economic Recovery Package
Congress may invest billions of dollars into states and local communities specifically to re-energize our economy, both literally and metaphorically. North Carolina could benefit greatly from this kick-start to a clean energy future. We anticipate the package to include direct spending and incentives for clean energy, retrofits of buildings to be more energy efficient, and for other environmental restoration projects.
Some of these funds may come directly to your community in the form of block grants. Is your community prepared?
Ask your mayor to use federal stimulous funds to support clean energy projects.

State Director, Guest Blogger
Molly Diggins, NC State Director, was a recent guest blogger on the Progressive Pulse, with her post "Clean Cars Coming to NC?" A preview:
President Obama’s move Monday (Jan 26) to allow states to set vehicle emission standards may be a breath of fresh air - quite literally - for North Carolina, where an estimated 40 percent of smog-forming emissions and 34 percent of global warming emissions in our air comes from cars and trucks.
Cool Cities Workshop Builds Solutions
Nearly 70 people traveled from across the state to Winston-Salem this weekend to discuss energy efficiency. The topic may not always be electrifying, but it is vital to our state and to future citizens.
