Dear ,Friend,
Great work getting emails to our state leaders last week! Scores of emails have been received by Governor Carcieri, the General Assembly, and the State Planning Council by folks like you demanding clean, affordable transportation choices. The biggest single step that Rhode Island can take at this point to reduce global warming pollution, move towards energy independence, and build a green prosperity is to invest in public transit. That means expanding bus service and building rapid transit corridors. Tell you friends to take action and join the chorus of Rhode Islanders demanding transportation choices!
1) A Fare Choice Revisited: Bills in RI General Assembly |
Last August, the Sierra Club released a report called A Fare Choice: How Rhode Island Can Invest in Public Transit and Energy Independence. Legislators across the state took notice. There are no less than a dozen bills this session in the General Assembly that address RIPTA's budget. Help build the momentum and ask your friends to take action today! Urge your friends to send a message to their state legislators demanding transportation choices. |
2) Wilhite's Blog: Quonset: wind-yes! What About Street Cars? |
So, there has been a flurry of letters in the Projo promoting and debunking the idea of building a container port at Quonset. Personally, I don't think it would be a good idea at all. Besides all the economic and environmental questions, there is the fact that that idea is so totally divisive in the progressive movement. It pits labor and environment right against each other. Do we want to do that again? Read More and Comment>> |
3) What are CoolCATs? |
Cool CATs are the Sierra Club's Cool Cities Community Action Teams. Cool Cities or Cool Communities are those local governments that sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Sierra Club Community Action Teams are teams of volunteer activists who work together to build environmental communities by hosting house parties, going door to door with our message, or participating in phone banks. |
Thank you for signing up for Cool CATs Weekly. Excitingly, Cranston this year joined Pawtucket, Providence, and Warwick as a "Cool" city! Nevertheless, there are still only these four "Cool" cities in Rhode Island. Sierra Club volunteers are working in Newport, North Kingstown and Barrington to make one of those communities the next Cool City or Town. Feel free to contact us if you would like to make your city Cool.
Sincerely,
Chris Wilhite Sierra Club Rhode Island Chapter |

Urge the General Assembly to Grow Transportation Choices in Rhode Island
Creating more transportation choices will generate new transit jobs, give Rhode Islanders access to greater diversity of job opportunities, cut global warming pollution from single-occupancy cars, protect open spaces by encouraging smarter residential and commercal growth, and reduce imported oil, making the Ocean State more energy independent.
