Rhode Island Chapter - Sierra Club

March 9, 2009

Dear Friend,

You have been part of quite a network over the past year. Thanks for continuing to take online action. Of course, taking your action offline is important too. AND there is a great opportunity to do that this week! The Rhode Island House and Senate Environment Committees will be hearing testimony on the Energy Independence and Climate Solutions Act (S488, H5706) this Wednesday and Thursday. Wanna come?

1) House & Senate Environment to Hear Energy Independence and Climate Solutions Act this Thursday

RI New Energy EconomyThis Wednesday, the Senate Committee on Environment and Agriculture will hear testimoney for S488, the Energy Independence and Climate Solutions Act of 2009, sponsored by Senator Bill Walaska. On Thursday, the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources will hear testimony on its companion bill, H5706 sponsored by Rep. Art Handy of Cranston. This bill would cap global warming emissions by 80% by the year 2050. If we are ever going to have a vibrant new energy economy in Rhode Island, we must put a cap on the dirty energy sources on the past. Since all fossil fuels used in Rhode Island are imported, it really gives our state an opportunity to invest in renewable energy, greening our buidlings, and making our transportation system more efficient.

RSVP to make your voice heard at the hearing.

If you can't make it to the hearing, you can send an email to your State Legislators urging them to support Rep. Handy's and Sen. Walaska's Energy Independence and Climate Solutions Act (S488, H5706).

2) Now You Can Give to the Club Online!
RI CoastThe Sierra Club Rhode Island Chapter has just made it easier for you to contribute to our work through our brand-new secure online donation page. Have you wanted to make a donation online but could not figure out how to use a credit card? Problem solved. You can either click on the "Give" button at the upper right of this message, or click on the button on our website www.ri.sierraclub.org or, for the time being, CLICK HERE.
3) What are Cool CATs?
Cool Cities
Cool CATs are the Sierra Club's Cool Cities Community Action Teams. Cool Cities or Cool Communities are those local governments that sign on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Sierra Club Community Action Teams are teams of volunteer activists who work together to build environmental communities by hosting house parties, going door to door with our message, or participating in phone banks.

Get involved in a Cool CAT today!
Thank you for signing up for Cool CATs Weekly. Excitingly, Cranston this year joined Pawtucket, Providence, and Warwick as a "Cool" city!  Nevertheless, there are still only these four "Cool" cities in Rhode Island. Sierra Club volunteers are working in Newport, North Kingstown and Barrington to make one of those communities the next Cool City or Town. Feel free to contact us if you would like to make your city Cool.

Sincerely,

Chris Wilhite

Take Action!

Tell your State Legislators to support the Energy Independence and Climate Solutions Act (S488, H5706)

The State of Rhode Island needs to regulate the emissions of greenhouse gases from all sectors. When passed into law next year, this bill will cap global warming pollution by 20%  by 2020 and 80% by 2050 and create a reporting mechanism for all sectors of the Rhode Island economy. Rhode Island's global warming bill is the only one in the country that addresses the need to significantly reduce automobile traffic to solve global warming.
