COAL - OREGON'S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET. Oregon prides itself on being sustainable, yet we still rely on 40% of our electricity from dirty 19th century energy half of which comes from PGE’s Boardman coal plant, and the rest from dirty coal-powered electricity imported from other states. Through our Beyond Coal Campaign, we’re launching an exciting new effort to make the entire Northwest coal-free! Our first big action is to support an important energy bill that helps get us off coal. RSVP to attend an April 9th hearing in Salem on this bill! We need your help to make Oregon coal-free! Learn more about this new campaign on our website, and contact Robin Everett or Cesia Kearns to get involved!
JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST LNG!
Oregon is threatened by three proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals and hundreds of miles of pipelines that would cut across farms, forests, rivers and public lands. The LNG Public Protection Act would safeguard Oregon’s communities and natural resources during the process of permitting LNG facilities. Take action and ask your state legislators to support the LNG Public Protection Act. If you're in the Portland area, join us on April 9th at 7pm at Portland State University for the film debut of "Crossroad on the Columbia," guest speaker Bill Bradbury (former Oregon Secretary of State), and a discussion about how you can get more involved in the fight against LNG in Oregon!

IT'S NOT TOO LATE! Thank you so much to all of you who have responded to our annual March fundraising appeal! Times are tough for many of us, and that means your gift has never been more important. If you haven't yet made your contribution this year, it's not too late! And, if you know a friend that wants to give to the Oregon Sierra Club, please send them this e-mail newsletter! You can give easily online and 100% of your donation will be spent here in Oregon to protect our air, water, and precious public lands. Every dollar counts!
CAN YOU HELP US WALK THE TALK? The Oregon Chapter rents an office that is lit with inefficient halogen light bulbs. To cut down our electric costs (and because it’s the right thing to do), we’re working to replace these 50 watt halogen bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs) that use only 5 watts and come with a 9 year guarantee. The problem? It’s expensive. The new bulbs cost almost $10 each (2-3 times the cost of a halogen bulb)! You can help us out by sending us a CFL (they can be purchased at any home depot - it's a two-prong bulb called an "ecobulb- model number MR16), or you can make a $10 donation online today and we'll use it to install green lighting in our office! |
GET OUTDOORS! Spring is around the corner and now is a great time to get outside and enjoy Oregon's environment (and maybe even learn more about how you can get involved with the Oregon Sierra Club!) Check out our new outings calendar to see a list of activities in your areas! OREGON'S OCEAN LEGACY Join us at the Sierra Club office in Portland on April 16 at 6:30pm and learn why marine reserves are important to restoring ocean health, and what we, as Oregonians, can do to help. Click here to learn more! BEND AREA FIELD TRIP The Sierra Club's Juniper Group is conducting monthly field trips to explore the impacts of logging and development projectw near Bend, Oregon. Join us on April 19 as we investigate a proposal that would log trees in a rare old growth ponderosa pine forest. Learn more by e-mailing Asante Riverwind. |
NEW ACTIVIST ORIENTATION! Want to get involved and don't know how? Join us on Tuesday, April 14 at 6pm for our "new activist orientation." Not from Portland or can't make the orientation? No sweat. E-mail Brian Pasko to arrange an orientation that works for you! TAKE ACTION TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING! This year, the Oregon Legislature has an opportunity to rebuild Oregon’s economy by passing legislation to combat global climate change. By investing in energy efficiency and capping and reducing greenhouse gas pollution, we can create thousands of green jobs across Oregon and save consumers and businesses on their energy and fuel bills. E-mail your state legisaltor today and ask them to support Senate Bill 80. |
