2012 election long, hard campaign

By Jane Ard-Smith

RMC Political Chair

I’ve hesitated writing this wrap-up article because even for a political junkie like me, it was a long, hard campaign season. Now that some time has passed, I’ve recovered enough to look back and assess the results. So how’d the Sierra Club do with its endorsements?

National election

President Obama, Sierra Club’s choice, won re-election. And although the environment did not play a major role in the presidential debates, climate change made a big impact when Hurricane Sandy roared through the Northeast just before the election. Our team in Washington, D.C. will be pressing President Obama to appoint environmental advocates for key positions (i.e., EPA Administrator), as well as work toward real climate change legislation.

In Colorado, we endorsed two congressional challengers and three incumbents. Representatives DeGette, Perlmutter, and Polis won reelection handily. Unfortunately, the two challengers, Joe Miklosi and Sal Pace, were not successful in their bids to unseat Representatives Gardner and Tipton. The Sierra Club sent resources to three campaigns: Miklosi, Pace, and Perlmutter. Thanks to Bryce Carter, Joshua Ruschhaupt, and Roger Singer for stepping in to help those three campaigns. The campaigns were appreciative of our efforts.

State election

We endorsed several candidates for the Colorado State Senate and State House of Representatives. I’m happy to report that ALL of our endorsed candidates won! Thanks to all of the Sierra Club members around the state for their hours of hard work to help make that happen.

On the State Senate side, congratulations to Senators Matt Jones ( SD 17), Rollie Heath (SD 18), Evie Hudak (SD 19), Mary Hodge (SD 25), Linda Newell (SD 26), Morgan Carroll (SD 29), Pat Steadman (SD 31) and Mike Johnston (SD 33). And on the State House side, we look forward to working with Representatives Labuda (HD 1), Ferrandino (HD 2), Kagan (HD 3), Pabon (HD 4), Duran (HD 5), Court (HD 6), Williams (HD 7), McCann (HD 8) Hullinghorst (HD 10), Singer (HD 11), Levy (HD 13), Lee (HD 18),  Tyler (HD 23), Schafer (HD 24, Primavera (HD 33), Peniston (HD 35), Ryden (HD 36), Fields (HD 42), Young (HD 50), Ginal (HD 52), Fischer (HD 53), Hamner (HD 61), and Vigil (HD 62).

Local election

Last, but certainly not least, we endorsed candidates at the local level. In Boulder County, congratulations go to endorsed candidates and new County Commissioners Elise Jones and Deb Gardner. We also endorsed new County Commissioners Terry Hart and Buffie McFadyen in Pueblo County. Our endorsed candidates in Garfield and Larimer counties ran great races, but ultimately fell short of election. Thanks to Sonja Linman, Aleks Briedis, and Karen Stockley for running terrific campaigns.

Looking to the future

So what’s next in terms of elections? We anticipate that local groups will be actively involved in ballot measures and local races in 2013. As always the RMC Political Committee remains available to help local groups with the endorsement process. And 2014 is right around the corner…
