FEATURED GROUP: Uncompahgre Group

By Carole Chowen, UG Executive Committee Co-Chair

The Uncompahgre Group has focused on recycling for several years now. We have been successful in instigating and encouraging recycling in the City of Grand Junction and at several events. The recently completed upgrade to Main Street included the installment of bright blue recycling barrels mounted next to trash barrels.

Uncompahgre GroupMembers have promoted and have actively worked at several events in Grand Junction and Mesa County:

  • Mesa County Health Fair (2 years),
  • Sober Grad Night (2 years),
  • JUCO (Junior College baseball championship) (4 years),
  • Country Jam (4 years),
  • 4th of July Celebration (4 years), and
  • The Fruita Fall Festival (2 years).

Some of these events are almost ready to continue the work on their own, letting us focus on new challenges. Next summer we will, hopefully, start a recycling program at Summer Wine Entertainment Series and Rock Jam. A majority of these events would not have recycling if it had not been for the members of the Uncompahgre Group contacting the event organizers and promoting recycling.

Over the years we have toured and worked with Curbside Recycling Indefinitely, the Mesa County Landfill and Waste Management.

Tabling at Earth Day and other occasions gives us the chance to spread the word. We have compiled a handout of references and opportunities for recycling beyond what is available in our community.
