Protect the Loggerhead Turtle

Loggerhead Turtles, like all sea turtles, are imperiled across their entire global range by threats to both their marine environment and the beaches where they lay their eggs.

The U.S. populations of Loggerheads in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans now have threatened species status, but on March 12, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service jointly proposed upgrading their status to endangered.

Please take action and support this proposed listing.  The heightened protection offered by endangered species status will better ensure survival of the Loggerhead Turtle.

Below is our suggested message:

Dear Sea Turtle Coordinator,
I strongly support the proposed change in the ESA listing of Loggerhead Turtles to endangered status, particularly for the U.S. populations in the North Pacific and Northwest Atlantic.

Commercial fishing operations off the west coast of Mexico and elsewhere in the world’s oceans use longline and gill fishing techniques that trap and drown hundreds of sea turtles every year, including Loggerhead Turtles.

In order for Loggerhead Turtles to recover, these fishing practices must stop, and instead alternatives like pole or troll fishing and channel nets, pound nets, traps and trotlines should be considered.

In addition, marine debris, ocean pollution, poor water quality and nesting habitat loss and degradation must be stopped in order to allow Loggerhead Turtles populations to recover and prevent extinction of the species. Consideration of climate change impacts on the prey species of Loggerhead Turtles also is essential for their survival.

Upgrading the Loggerhead Turtle to endangered species status will give the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service the tools they need to protect the distinct populations in the North Pacific and Northwest Atlantic.

I appreciate this opportunity to voice my strong support for the proposed endangered species listing for the Loggerhead Turtle.

Sincerely,

{Your Name}
