Protect Front Range Communities from Toxic Fracking Impacts

The Sierra Club has endorsed proposed ballot initiatives in Broomfield, Fort Collins, Loveland, and Lafayette to stop the spread of harmful drilling and fracking activities on the Front Range and protect our air, water, and environment from toxic air emissions and spills. Broomfield and Fort Collins need your help immediately to be successful in their petition drives—each for a 5-year moratorium, allowing time to review health impact studies.  Broomfield’s deadline is July 26 and Fort Collins’ is July 31.  We encourage Sierra Club members and supporters to volunteer with the local citizen groups organizing the petition effort.  You do not have to be a resident of these communities to circulate petitions.

In Broomfield contact the Our Broomfield citizen group at ourbroomfield@gmail.com.

In Fort Collins email organizer Kelly Giddens with Citizens for a Healthy Fort Collins at kellygiddens@me.com or call her at 970-430-6185.

If you have further questions about these efforts or would like to be on our Beyond Oil & Gas Team activist list in general, please email me at lauren.swain@rmc.sierraclub.org.

We are glad to report that on July 9, the citizen group East Boulder County United turned in over twice the number of signatures required to place a charter amendment on the fall ballot for a ban on all oil and gas extraction in Lafayette, and Protect Our Loveland also collected enough signatures to complete their successful petition drive on July 8.  The Sierra Club endorses the Lafayette charter amendment proposal and Loveland's 2-year moratorium proposal and we will work to promote the success of these measures this fall.

Tonight, Tuesday July 16, at 6pm, the Fort Collins city council is considering a 7-year moratorium on fracking. We urge you to attend the meeting at 300 Laporte Ave and/or write to the council members at cityleaders@fcgov.com to advocate for clean air, water, and land in Fort Collins and beyond.

In other good news, shortly after the our last Peak and Prairie issue was published, the Boulder County Commissioners passed an 18-month drilling moratorium.  Many thanks to the commissioners and to all who contributed their time and effort to pushing for this breakthrough. And big-time appreciation to our Beyond Oil & Gas team member Neshama Abraham for her tireless leadership!
