President Obama promised swift action to fight global warming, but to implement his big picture vision he will need grassroots support to counter the millions of dollars Big Oil and Coal spend lobbying Washington, D.C. That's why the Sierra Club created the Big Picture Campaign to build support for the Obama Administration's plan to build a clean energy economy through public comments, letters to editors, testimony, rallies, meetings, petitions and a mobilized, informed network of volunteers calling for action.
On April 17th the Obama Administration took the first step towards a big picture plan when, after years of denial and inaction during the Bush administration, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a finding that global warming pollution endangers our health and welfare. This finding is the first step toward regulating global warming pollution from coal plants, cars and other major polluters.
We gathered over 40,000 public comments in support of the finding, and turned the EPA's two hearings into powerful demonstrations that our country's future will not be set by the coal industry and their allies. Check out the amazing work your fellow volunteers did in Seattle and Arlington.
It is this type of grassroots support that will create real change, and that's why the Big Picture is a volunteer led campaign. On June 2nd climate change leaders gathered at over 70 house parties across the country to help us kickoff the campaign and plan how we are going to make 2009 the year we turn the tide on global warming. Volunteers watched videos from the EPA hearings, participated in a conference call with Big Picture leaders, and discussed the issues and actions that they believe will have the greatest impact in their communities.
As President Obama brings together the pieces of his clean energy vision, the Big Picture campaign will support his administration by overwhelming the opposition from big oil and coal in numbers, enthusiasm, and scientific fact. Please check out our Take Action Page for the latest information on how you can get involved, and don't forget to join the campaign discussion on our Climate Crossroads Group.
