The Sierra Club mourns the loss of Rebecca Tarbotton, executive director of Rainforest Action Network. Becky died this week while vacationing in Mexico.
I had the great pleasure of working with Becky for a few years while we were together at Rainforest Action Network. Becky was a fun-loving but fierce advocate for forests, human rights, and corporate responsibility. She had an uncommon grace and a unique ability to persuade grassroots activists and corporate CEOs alike. Becky directed RAN's global finance campaign that fought, successfully, to change the environmental and human rights policies of the world's biggest banks. She then became program director and finally a highly effective and successful executive director.
Becky was a fun-loving, fiddle-playing, influential leader who worked closely with many of us here at the Sierra Club. We need more women leaders of environmental organizations, and losing Becky is especially painful. We extend our condolences to her friends and family and will continue to support Rainforest Action Network and its important work in the days ahead.
