The Candidates:
Steve Sheeky | Jonathan Harris | Emily Koo | Nicholas Oliver | Amato "Bud" DeLuca
Steve Sheeky:
I am working on
a B.A. in Communication Studies and a minor in Sustainability at URI. In my
previous professional life, I was President of the Environmental Network of
Rhode Island volunteer program for Bank of America from 2007 to 2008, earning
national recognition from the corporation for sustainability and volunteer
motivation. I have also been involved with numerous non-profit agencies,
including the annual International Coastal Clean-Up Day, the Land and Water
Summit, the Fred Lippitt Woonasquatucket River Greenway, and the GROW UP
Community Garden in Woonsocket. I have been accepted to the URI Master
Gardener's program for the spring. Rhode Island has a unique natural
environment which needs protection and stewardship. Residents of our state
deserve fair access to their environmental resources. I strongly agree with the
Sierra Club's mission of preparing our communities for the realities of a
post-carbon world; from renewable energy development to the support of a
comprehensive and robust public transit system. I would enjoy using my
experience, knowledge, and passion at the Sierra Club of Rhode Island to help
the chapter continue its success on the environmental advocacy stage.
Jonathan Harris:
Jonathan
is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design with a Masters of Industrial
Design. His graduate work examined transportation and its relationship to
community and the civic experience. Jonathan began his postgraduate
career managing the national FTA sponsored competition: Bus Rapid Transit and
the American Community, an examination of vehicles, stations and routes needed
to implement BRT in America. Upon completion of the competition, he took a
position at a design and planning consultancy with projects spanning a range of
disciplines: urban design, planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and
graphic design. He has studied transportation from the aspect of the
pedestrian, the personal vehicle, bicycles, freight, busses, trains, and
ferries. In 2006, Jonathan started Transit Matters. Transit Matters is a design
and construction firm focusing on unique Urban Amenities™ supporting
multi-modal circulation and placemaking. The firm provides the tools to reclaim
a lost public realm, the street, for all users. Jonathan is currently teaching
at Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology and providing transit design and
planning services to individuals, neighborhoods, and cities in New England. He
is an Executive Committee Member and Transportation Committee Chair of the R.I.
Chapter of the Sierra Club.
Emily Koo:
Emily Koo hails
from deep South Texas, and is now a Rhode Islander of two years (and counting).
She organizes for the Rhode Islanders for Fair Elections coalition, of which
the Sierra Club is a member, and co-coordinates the student group Brown
Democracy Matters -- both groups that advocate for campaign finance reform in
the state of Rhode Island. In addition to good government reform, Emily works
on environmental issues with the RI Student Climate Coalition and plans to
devote two more years to a degree in Environmental Studies at Brown. She is
also proud to be interning for one of the best advocates for the environment in
the Senate!
Nicholas Oliver:
Nicholas is a
lifelong New Englander, spending most of his life in East Providence. He
recently completed his service on the Rhode Island Sierra Club staff
coordinating our Go 60 MPG campaign. He has volunteered to continue to help our
chapter by leading our fundraising programs as Chair of the Development
Committee. Nicholas has worked for other nonprofit and trade associations,
directing issues relating to public health, education, and the environment. One
of his biggest achievements was co-leading the smoke-free workplaces law
campaign in the early and mid-2000s in Rhode Island and other New England
states. Nicholas has his Bachelors in Political Economy and Public Relations
from the University of Hartford and his Masters in Public Affairs from the
University of Massachusetts Boston. He is also a Certified Association
Executive through the American Society of Association Executives, the highest
achievement earned by nonprofit professionals. A father of two young children,
he enjoys camping at Rhode Island’s state parks, spending time at Scarborough
South State Beach, attending East Providence Townie Football games, and walking
along the East Bay Bike Path He can frequently be seen with his dog Sabin at
the Barrington Dog Park.
Amato "Bud" DeLuca:
My interest in
becoming a member of the Executive Committee of the Sierra Club stems from my
belief that it is time for me to do more for the environment than just give
money and pay lip service to those who actually advocate through groups like
the Sierra Club. I am and have been a strong believer of the mission of the
Sierra Club and I see my role on the Committee as helping to advance the Sierra
Club’s mission forcefully and successfully. Needless to say, I am committed to
leaving a legacy of clean air, clear water and natural places of beauty. The
Sierra Club must continue to be instrumental in preserving our natural habitat
for generations to come. We all know that there are forces at work in this
country and around the world attempting to undermine the Sierra Club’s goals. I
want to do everything that I can to prevent this from happening. As an attorney
with many years of experience in the courtroom, I believe that I can be of
assistance to the Sierra Club in its quest to preserve the environment and our
natural resources. It is my hope that you will seriously consider me as a
candidate for the Executive Committee of the Sierra Club.
