The Northwest Power and Conservation Council (NWPCC) creates a plan every 5 years for how energy will be used in the Northwest states of Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Idaho. Each state has two council-members, appointed by their Governor. Currently the NWPCC is developing their 6th Power Plan for the Northwest. This plan will impact how utilities in each state generate electricity for the next 20 years -- this is a huge opportunity to kick coal out of the Northwest, and become the first renewable energy region in the country!

The NWPCC draft plan should address three important elements:

  • Coal -  A timeline for phasing out coal in the Northwest by 2020 council staff's analysis shows this is both achievable and affordable.
  • Carbon - The plan should account for the future cost of carbon pollution.
  • Conservation - A strong plan that maximizes efficiency the staff's analysis says we can meet 85% of our future energy needs with efficiency alone. Let's keep those targets high!
