Overview
Aggressively improving energy efficiency is the quickest and most cost effective way to reduce strain on energy supplies, reduce global warming emissions, control costs for consumers, create jobs, and improve our economy. Representative Ed Markey has introduced legislation that would establish a Federal energy efficiency resource standard (EERS) for retail electric and natural gas distributors. This bill, the Save American Energy Act (HR 889), will require utilities to become steadily more efficient between now and 2020, resulting in savings of 15 percent for electricity and 10 percent for natural gas.
