Nestled between the Brooks Range and the shores of the Beaufort Sea in remote northeast Alaska, the narrow coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the biological heart of this untamed wilderness. The Arctic's rolling tundra and sparkling coastal waters are home to a stunning array of wildlife:
- Nearly 200 species of birds visit and nest on the region's tundra and wetlands.
- Caribou, muskoxen, wolverines, grizzly and polar bears roam the vast expanse of land.
- Walrus, bowhead and beluga whales ply the Arctic waters.
These creatures have roamed the far north for centuries, but now this critical habitat is threatened. America's Arctic wilderness is under siege from local and global forces being shaped by human actions: oil and gas development is being heavily promoted for the coastal plain of the Refuge. Combined with the impacts of global warming, this would wreak havoc on this vast landscape, and the magnificent wildlife that depend on it.
For over 30 years, the Sierra Club has worked to protect the pristine wilderness of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: petitioning Congress to protect the coastal plain as wilderness and blocking numerous attempts to open the refuge to oil and gas development. We are also working hard to promote a rapid shift to clean, renewable forms of energy which will slow the effects of global warming on the Refuge, as well as organizing citizens in communities around the country to take action to ensure that this crown jewel of our wild heritage is permanently protected.
