Acadia's unspoiled beauty and accessibility make it one of the best-loved wild places in the East. Yet being so close to civilization is jeopardizing the very thing that makes it so special. Air pollution is damaging its views, and now a resort development has been proposed - right next to the Park! Sponsor Acadia and help ensure that it stays accessible and wild.

About Acadia

Located on the beautiful Maine coast, Acadia National Park is famed for its pristine ocean views. Originally established in 1916 as “Sieur de Monts National Monument,” Acadia was the first national park east of the Mississippi River. Today the Park preserves over 45,000 acres and is home to:

• Approximately 2,000 species! Peregrine falcons, black guillemots, white-tailed deer, river otters, and harbor seals to name a few.
• Diverse terrain: rocky headlands, meadows, bogs, and freshwater lakes.
• More than a dozen islands and 26 glacier-shaped peaks.

Recent visitors, however, may be surprised to find a grayish wall of haze instead of clear views from mountain peaks, mostly due to sulfate particles from power plant pollution several states away. In addition, a development company has unveiled plans to build a suite of luxury hotels and homes adjacent to the Schoodic Peninsula - seen by many as the “quiet part” of Acadia - which would completely transform the area and disrupt the habitat of many of the park’s unique bird species.

Sierra Club and Acadia

The Sierra Club has worked to clean up or encourage the shutting down of dirty polluting fossil fuel power plants and substitute the use of clean, renewable forms of energy such as wind and solar power. In addition, the Club is opposing the development plans near the Schoodic Peninsula and is working with other community groups to ensure that this area is protected from incompatible land uses.
