Support a Rio Grande del Norte National Monument!

The Rio Grande del Norte is a place of amazing vistas -- the Rio Grande River flowing through the deep gorge, sagebrush-covered plains, and high desert piñon-juniper forests.

By designated the Rio Grande del Norte as a national monument we can permanently protect this amazing place, its wildlife, and its waterways from destructive industrialization and development.

These lands are integral to sustaining life. Thousands of migratory birds like eagles, hummingbirds, and osprey traverse these skies while elk and big horn sheep feed on its slopes. People also need the Rio Grande del Norte these waters and wild lands feed agriculture and recreation, and in turn local economies.

Sign the petition and tell our decision-makers that now is the time to permanently safeguard the Rio Grande del Norte for future generations.

Petition:

Dear Senators Bingaman and Udall and Representatives Lujan and Heinrich,

I join with others in support of your effort toward creating a National Monument Area Designation for the Rio Grande del Norte area, including Ute Mountain, Rio San Antonio and the Rio Grande Gorge Region.

We recognize that:

Tourism is the most significant industry in Northern New Mexico;

The majority of tourists come to New Mexico to enjoy the unparalleled scenery and pristine landscapes, as well as wildlife and wilderness recreation;

Permanently protecting our incredible landscape will help preserve and grow our tourism industry. Failure to protect these areas will leave them vulnerable to degradation;

The creation of a National Conservation Area with designated wilderness or a National Monument for Taos County will give local communities a natural attraction and resource to use as a part of a long-term sustainable economic development plan;

This designation will provide protection for wildlife and natural resources and protect the unique history and heritage of the place; and

The establishment of a protective designation for these lands will provide for future generations of New Mexicans continuing opportunities to enjoy the recreational opportunities to hunt, fish, observe wildlife and experience solitude.

Please accept this letter as an endorsement of protecting these special areas.
