SMOG

THREAT

Children are at greater risk from life-threatening exposure to smog because their lungs are still developing and because they are more likely to be active outdoors. Even at very low levels, smog can cause asthma, reduced lung function, airway irritation and damage, increased respiratory infections, permanent lung damage, chest pain, wheezing, coughing, and even premature death.

SAFEGUARD

In mid-2011, the EPA will update standards for smog under the Clean Air Act that will protect our health, save billions of dollars in health costs (far more than it would cost to achieve the standard), and prevent millions of Americans from missing work and school days because of respiratory illness.
