SAY NO TO JORDAN COVE LNG!

The Oregon Department of State Lands is now accepting public comment on the application by the Port of Coos Bay for a dock to accomodate the proposed Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. Imported from places like Russia and the Middle East, LNG emits 20-30% more global warming pollution than domestic natural gas, and the Jordan Cove project would be accompanied by a 220 mile pipeline that would destroy old growth forests and critical wildlife habitat across southern Oregon. Do you love being outdoors and want to help us fulfill our mission to explore, enjoy, and protect Oregon's environment and precious public lands?  Each year Sierra Club volunteers lead over 100 outings to some of Oregon's most special places -- inspiring even more people to get involved in protecting this place we call home.

On President's Day weekend (February 18th-20th) we're hosting a comprehensive training program in Molalla, Oregon that will provide you with the first aid and leadership skills and certifications you need to become a Sierra Club outings leader. We're looking to recruit new potential leaders from across the state to participate in this program and commit to leading outings for the Sierra Club in 2011 and beyond. Tillamook Forest  PROTECT OUR STATE FORESTS!

The Sierra Club is entering a new stage in our efforts to permanently protect critical salmon streams and recreation areas in Oregon's state forests! Though there are nearly 850,000 acres of state forests owned by all Oregonians, there are currently no significant areas in the Tillamook, Clatsop, Santiam or other state lands that are permanently protected from the harmful impacts of logging and roadbuilding.

Sensitive 'salmon anchor habitats' are open to extensive cutting with minimal streamside protections. And in 2010, the Oregon Board of Forestry approved a new management plan that could open over 100,000 acres of the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests between Portland and the Coast to new clear-cutting in coming years.
