Sierra Club Currents - Get the Latest Environmental Buzz

“The E.P.A. is the scariest agency in the federal government, an agency run amok.”

- Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) who plans to gut the agency’s funding

Pollution1) Take Action:  Defend Pollution Protections

The Republican leadership has made its choice and it makes us sick. It took them exactly one day in office to show their true colors and declare an all-out war on the Clean Air Act and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

House Republicans like Reps. Darrell Issa (R-CA), Fred Upton (R-MI), and John Carter (R-TX) are trying to dismantle the public health protections we've fought so hard for, all for one simple reason: to support polluters like coal and oil companies’ bottom line.

More than 30,000 people have already spoken up in support of EPA. Add your voice and urge your Representative to support the EPA and its role in protecting our health from pollution.

Trucks 2) Take Action: Clean Up Big Trucks

Did you know that the trucks we rely on every day for the transportation and delivery of goods across the country only get about six miles to the gallon? This summer thousands of people like you called for raising vehicle fuel efficiency to 60 miles per gallon and slashing their global warming pollution. Now it’s time to make our country’s biggest trucks cleaner and more fuel efficient too.

Tell the EPA and Department of Transportation to make sure that big trucks are more fuel efficient and less polluting.

Flowers 3) Arizona: Deadly Shooting

As the details continue to emerge, our thoughts remain with those who are coping with the deadly shooting in Tucson, Arizona, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Representative Giffords is a fighter for the environment, working hard to protect public lands, support clean energy development and fight climate pollution. We wish her and the others injured a full recovery.

oil spill 4) BP Disaster: Full Report

The National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling released its full report on the BP disaster today. The report calls for widespread reform of the offshore drilling industry, including better safety regulations and more stringent enforcement by federal agencies. The report also includes several recommendations that have been priority elements of the Sierra Club’s disaster response agenda.
