Sierra Club Currents - Get the Latest Environmental Buzz

"Obama really needs to address the urgency of getting [the country] off coal and fossil fuels if he wants us to get out the vote for him in 2012."

 - Ashley Hall, 21, a junior at Michigan State University, one of hundreds of youth who descended on Washington, D.C. for Power Shift.

Take Action: The Oil Is Still There

A year after the catastrophic BP oil disaster, GulfBP oil disaster 3 communities are still struggling to recover. Meanwhile, oil companies continue to report record profits and push lawmakers for even more access to drill our lands and waters. In January, the President's Oil Spill Commission released its final recommendations, which would support many of the Gulf Coast's recovery priorities and help protect our nation's coasts from future drilling disasters. Gulf communities are still waiting for action from Congress and the Administration to restore the region.

Take Action! Tell your Senators to adopt and implement the Oil Spill Commission's recommendations and end subsidies to Big Oil.

Delaware Gap, NJ PA2) Take Action: Help Secure Funds for Land and Water Conservation

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is one of the most effective tools the government has to acquire lands critical for conservation and habitat protection.  Unfortunately, in the nearly five decades since it was first established, only once has it been fully funded.  Projects that receive money from LWCF are vital to the continued protection of our national parks, forests and wildlife refuges.

Please contact your representative now and tell them to support strong funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

3) Take Action: Demand a Transportation Bill that Fights Our Oil Addiction

Our nation's transportation system is at a crossroads -- Congress is writing a transportation bill that could worsen our addiction to oil -- or could prioritize investment in low- and no-carbon transportation choices that break our addiction to oil and put our country back to work.

Take Action!Tell your senators that America needs a transportation system that ends our dependence on oil, cuts pollution, and provides clean, efficient, and affordable transportation options.
