John Muir Outings Series - April 2012

We had so much fun last year that we are bringing back the John Muir Outings Series for 2012! Help us celebrate Earth Day and John Muir's birthday by going back to our roots by getting outside to explore some of the special places we are working to protect through our four priority conservation campaigns. To support the Georgia Chapter’s work to protect these special, threatened places, a suggested donation of $25 is requested per participant, per trip.  Click the date and the name of the trip for more details and to sign up!

April 7 -  Darby Farms Tour & Potluck
sustainable farmingWe will walk the property and learn as we go the key differences between factory farms and small sustainable farms, and how we reduce our environmental impact through these ecological practices.  First we'll see the brooders (big mama hen) and the baby chicks, poults and ducklings that are keep warm and dry within (you can hold one!). After we check out the farm, we'll take a hike along the creek, see some shoals, trout lilys, old growth tress, the bridge overlooking both east and west vistas, and historic graves from the civil war era.

chattahoocheeApril 14 – Overnight Camp at Chattahoochee Bend State Park
Georgia's newest state park showcases a spectacular tract of wilderness in northwest Coweta County.  Located in a graceful bend of the Chattahoochee River, right between two of Georgia Power's coal plants, Plant Yates, and Plant Wansley. While we enjoy the five miles of river frontage, we will talk about our Beyond Coal Campaigns efforts to retire these two plants and about Georgia Power's efforts to stymie solar and wind development in Georgia.

April 21 – Muir's Birthday Hike
Waters Creek waterfallJoin fellow Sierrans as we celebrate the birthday of our founder, John Muir, with a walk in the woods of the North Georgia. We'll explore the Chestatee Wildlife Management area where we'll take in the beautiful Waters Creek and waterfall, take note of our threatened Hemlocks, observe about both wildlife and fish management, and see nature recovering from a forest fire.

April 28 – Atlanta Streetcar Tour
streetcarCome check out the progress of the Atlanta Streetcar, a modern, ADA compliant, electrically-powered transit system on a 2-hour walking tour of the route that connects Peachtree Street with Sweet Auburn Avenue. The line will run on electricity and will release zero-emissions into downtown Atlanta. And the line's cars will be built using sustainable and recycled materials in a facility that uses renewable energy sources.

Park Pride Annual Conference - March 26

Park Pride ConferencePark Pride's 11th Annual Parks and Greenspace Conference promises to be the most ground breaking yet. Across the country, long-forgotten transportation corridors are being re-imagined as greenspaces. While The Atlanta BeltLine is the most notable local example of gray infrastructure becoming a green amenity, there are many success stories of communities looking to re-purpose neglected or even active highway corridors into park-like networks of trails and wildlife corridors.

Plant Washington Air Permit Hearing - March 28

Our latest appeal of the Plant Washington air pollution permit, which does not include limits that comply with the recent EPA mercury rule, will be held on Wednesday, March 28th, in the Office of State Administrative Hearings, 230 Peachtree Street NW Suite 850 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Contact Seth Gunning for more information.
