The National Security and Federal Lands Protection Act (HR 1505) was recently introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives. If this bill passes, more than 30 federal protection laws, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act, would be waived on public lands in a zone that extends 100 miles into the United States from all land borders. The bill puts dozens of national parks, tribal lands, and protected natural areas at risk. Disguised as a border-security initiative, it is in fact an assault on public lands and environmental health.

Tell your representative to say no to HR 1505.

For more than 40 years, the Clean Air Act has successfully protected our air and water and helped Americans live healthier lives. Unfortunately, some in Congress are shamelessly trying to gut key provisions and put our collective public health at risk by advancing a bill that is a veritable goody bag for Big Coal and Big Oil.

Tell your representative to get serious about addressing our dependence on dirty fossil fuels and to quit playing politics with public health. Hands off the Clean Air Act!

Hawaii made history last week by becoming the first state in the country to ban plastic bags -- as well as paper bags that are not at least 40 percent recycled. "Being the first state to pass this is tremendous. It will have a huge impact. We estimate 450 million bags each year will be kept out of the waste stream in the state," says Sierra Club Hawai'i Chapter Director Robert Harris.
