If you agree that the United States should be supporting climate-friendly policies overseas, not doing Big Oil's bidding, take action now!

Tar Sands Mining
Side with Climate

Dear Friend,

The European Union has passed a law to reduce emissions from transportation fuels by six percent by 2020. It has also proposed categorizing tar sands as an exceptionally dirty source of oil, thereby encouraging fuel suppliers to turn to cleaner forms of energy in order to reduce carbon pollution.

U.S. oil refiners have been chomping at the bit to use a new trade agreement being negotiated between the U.S. and the EU to weaken Europe's proposed rule. And here's the most disturbing part: the United States Trade Representative has joined Big Oil in raising concerns about the tar sands rule!

The United States must side with the climate, not Big Oil's interests. Tell President Obama: Support climate-friendly policies, and don't stand in the way of EU's important tar sands rule.

This summer, President Obama pledged that he would reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline if it would be damaging to our climate. If he really means that, he must not allow the U.S. Trade Representative to violate that principle by supporting tar sands use abroad.

Climate policies like the EU Fuel Quality Directive must not be undermined by Big Oil or by our trade rules. It isn't enough that we reject tar sands at home; we have to support international efforts to reject them as well, for the good of our climate.

Make sure U.S. trade policy doesn't undermine President Obama's climate promises. Tell President Obama that we strongly oppose the U.S. Trade Representative's efforts to undermine EU climate progress on behalf of Big Oil.

It's up to all of us to remain vigilant against wrongheaded policies that choose dirty fossil fuels over the moral obligation we have to protect our planet for our children and future generations.

Thanks for all you do for the environment,

Michael Marx
