Dear
Fellow Sierran
Here's what's in this week's edition of CoolCATs Weekly:
1) The RIPTA Budget
2) It's Barbecue Time
3) Reflections on the Rio Summit, 20 Years of Inaction
1) The RIPTA Budget
|
The verdict is in, and transit riders in Rhode Island have been given a reprieve. Last week, the RIPTA Board enacted a budget that ensures there will be no service cuts or layoffs this year. The budget will require the agency to engage in deficit spending, but that problem can be resolved next legislative session. Although it's not everything that we have been asking for, it does show that our policy makers were listening to the public outcry. Raise a toast to grassroots power.

2) It's Barbecue Time
|
Summer is here, and that means it's time to break out the grills and enjoy the company of friends outdoors in beautiful weather. The Rhode Island Chapter is getting into the swing of things with its first ever Eco-BBQ, which will be coordinated with our June Outing in Lincoln Woods Park. On the 30th, the hike will begin at 11:30. The barbecue will kick off around 1pm at site #35 near the lake. It will be pot luck style with an emphasis on local/seasonal foods. Please let us know what you intend to bring at outings@risierraclub.org. Thanks, please let us know you're coming with an email or by RSVPing on the Facebook event page.

3) Reflections on the Rio Summit, 20 Years of Inaction
|
You have probably seen the amazing video of Severn Suzuki speaking at the 1992 Rio Summit as a 12 year old. Well, it's been 20 years and Severn is reflecting on what has happened in the intervening years. Take some time and reflect with her with this great interview from Democracy Now.
